Vampire Knight ep 08

Wednesday, May 28th, 2008

Ichijou visits Kaname and finds the guy looking depressed so he decides to leave Kaname to get some sleep. The other vampires are also concerned about this but Ichijou suggests that they go to sleep as well. The group is then interrupted a maid who’s about to deliver a visit permission to Kaname. Ichijou decides to approve it since Kaname is not in good mood. Upon seeing the document, however, he becomes horrified because the person who’s coming to visit is none other than his grandfather, a person who’s very famous in the business world that there’s no business which does not involve Ichijou Group. Even in the world of vampires, this person is a force to be reckoned with. His name is Ichijou Asatou, also known "Ichi-ou". In the council of ancients, Ichi-ou continues to be one of the most senior vampires. Ruka adds that the council of ancients is the highest body of command in their world but it doesn’t really have a hold over them. Despite this, Ichijou doesn’t want to disturb the peace of their dorm for Kaname’s sake.

Later on that day, every single vampire students gathered at the dorm waiting for Ichi-ou. Ruka is amused with how afraid everyone seems to be. Shiki admits that he too is afraid but he wonders which one is more scary: this guy or Kaname? Aidou thinks that is yet to be seen. If things is not bad enough, Kaname also comes down to see Ichi-ou, claiming he hasn’t seen the guy for a long time. When Ichi-ou arrives, he’s amused to see the lively reception considering the fact that he’s just there to see his ‘cute’ grandson. Tension clearly exists between Kaname and Ichi-ou because apparently Kaname once rejected Ichi-ou from becoming his guardian. Ichi-ou then bravely grabs Kaname’s hand, hoping that one day he’ll be able to share the later’s blood. Ruka and Aidou immediately snap and push Ichi-ou’s hand away from Kaname. Aidou asks Ichi-ou if he knows that drawing blood from pureblood is a vampire’s greatest taboo. He promptly gets a slap from Kaname for saying this. I hope he keeps a counter for this.

Later on that night, Ruka comes to Kaname’s room so he beckons her to come in. She wonders why he still hasn’t punished her. Kaname finds it weird that she wants to be punished. Ruka then comes closer, saying how lately Kaname doesn’t look happy. She offers her blood to him but he refuses, assuring her that he’s okay. Ruka looks upset when she comes out of the room so Cain decides to console her. She explains how the only time Kaname wanted her blood was when she first arrived at the school. Cain narrates how when they drink the blood of one of their kind, they usually develops feelings. Ruka explains how despite her feelings, she’s just a fool to Kaname. Meanwhile, Ichi-ou orders Ichijou to keep an eye on Kaname but Ichijou tells his grandfather that he has no intention of harming his friend. Ichi-ou argues that Ichijou doesn’t understand a thing. He believes that a friendship forged on the basis of hypocritical peace….but he doesn’t get to finish his sentence because Yuuki, who waits outside, tells him that

Cross

Academy

is peaceful.

It turns out Yuuki and Zero have been asked by Cross to ask Ichi-ou to come and see him. Despite his disapproval, Ichi-ou agrees to come with the two to Cross’ office. Later on, Yuuki look happy because Kaname had just praised her hard work. When she goes to the bathroom, however, she finds Zero already in it. He wonders what Kaname could possibly want with Yuuki. In her defence, Yuuki claims that she has no intention on giving Kaname her blood. She points out that she intends on giving her blood to Zero therefore, she can’t possible giving it out so easily to others. She wants a confirmation from Zero that they have indeed made up their mind. Upon hearing this, Zero push Yuuki against the wall, looking like he’s going to draw her blood again. After staring at her for a while, however, Zero stops and tells her that she’s a fool because she’s the one who hasn’t made up her mind. Yuuki becomes angry to hear this and proceeds to leave the guy alone. After she left, Cross comes into the bathroom and wonders why Yuuki is angry.

Regardless of what happened between the two, Cross is happy that Zero is alone because he has something to discuss with him. Apparently hunters association has sent them a profile of a Level E vampire and they want Zero to hunt said vampire. Zero has no choice in this. The next day, Yuuki notices Zero sneaking out of the school so she decides to follow him and end up seeing him entering an abandoned building in the city. At the same time, Shiki and Rima have arrived in the same place. Rima reminds Shiki that he’s forgotten to carry an umbrella to protect himself from the sun. Their agent tells them to do whatever they need to do quickly or else they’ll be late for shooting. She also urges Shiki to share Rima’s umbrella since he gets sunburned easily. Moreover, she wants them to act more like the professional models that they are. After the agent left, Shiki wonders why they have to hunt an ex-human on a daytime. Rima explains because the Senior members don’t want the vampire hunters to catch the guy before they do.

In the garden, the two bump into Yuuki, who’s still lurking outside the mansion. Meanwhile, Zero has found the guy in question but before Zero can shoot him, the guy already bolts out. Yuuki, Shiki and Rima hear the gunshot so they decide to go in to investigate. Yuuki ends up facing the vampire but Shiki asks her to step aside. He then bites his own finger, causing it to bleed. The blood, however, defies gravity and looks more like a whip as it pours out of the small wound. He then uses his blood whip to attack the Level E in question. After a while, the guy decides to flee again so Yuuki uses the opportunity to find Zero. Unfortunately for her, the Level E shows up again and drags her feet. Before he can do anything else, however, Zero appears and kills the vampire. Yuuki thanks Zero, unaware that a crow has been watching them, relaying the vision to a mysterious girl who’s glad to know that Zero has grown up to be such a good-looking guy. She then decides that she would like to attend Cross school as well.

Impression

I always think Ichi-ou looks kind of unusual for a grandfather. He looks like a young, silver-haired guy who simply has grown a beard, or an older version of Dante (front right) from Devil May Cry. I think the weirdness also comes from the fact that this seemingly young guy is supposed to be Ichijou’s grandfather. Does this mean that not only vampires live longer than normal humans, their aging process is also comparatively slower to normal humans? If this is the case, is it also applicable to humans who are turned into vampires? It’s also interesting to hear what Cain said about how feelings tend to develop after vampire drinks the blood of another vampire. On the one hand, this can sound like a weird love potion kind of effect. Having said that, it looks like the author wanted the act of drinking blood to be an allusion to exual intercourse. Although sexual intercourse usually starts out as a response to lust, sometimes feelings emerged afterwards. As a result, people become jealous when their sexual partner, or in this case, blood-sucking partner, doesn’t seem to be interested in them anymore.

This is why the discussion between Zero and Yuuki in the bathroom sounds very amusing because Yuuki tells Zero that she can’t possibly give her blood freely to others since she intends on consistently giving hers to Zero. I know the literal meaning of the sentence is that she can’t possibly giving blood to every vampires since she’ll then run out of blood herself. But it can also be interpreted as Yuuki not willing to give herself around to every vampire out there and only will do it with Zero. Speaking of which, I wasn’t impressed with Zero’s rudeness in that scene. I know he’s jealous but what he said was pretty rude considering that Yuuki does give her blood without asking for anything in return. The least that he can do is to be nice to her. Moving along, I have no idea why Aidou puts up with Kaname’s antics. It seems no matter what he does, he always gets slapped by Kaname and yet he takes it over and over again. Slapping is also far more humiliating than a punch because it implies that the person who gets slapped is far beneath the one who struck against him that he doesn’t even deserve a punch.

Overall, I really enjoyed the episode. I love how the writers gave more screentime to show that fight between Shiki vs Level E vampire. IIRC, their fight in the manga is very brief. It’s interesting to know that Shiki and Rima work as a model because it means they have to actually work during daytime. Their scene together also confirms what I suspected last week: vampires in this series can walk around in daytime. The catch is that they have to wear protective gear to protect themselves. Next week looks to be more fun because my favorite character, Kurenai Maria will make her first appearance. To be honest, I didn’t actually expect her voice to be that girly so that’s a bit disappointing. I thought she should sound more mysterious just like Rima’s voice. I was thinking someone like Noto Mamiko as her VA. Also, what’s with the purple hair? I thought she’d be blonde. Oh well, I just hope the character design still looks nice even though they’re not exactly what I had in mind. Moreover, we’ll get to see a new character who actually is closely related to one of the existing character in the series.

Vampire Knight ep 07

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008

Yuki comes to visit Zero who is busy training at shooting range. Yuki tells Zero that she’s worried about him but Zero is back to being his sarcastic self. After a couple of rounds, he notices Yuki’s neck bandage so he suggests that she removes it since it’s very noticeable. Yuki, however, points out its necessity to prevent the bitemark from being known until it disappears. Zero looks upset about this and believes that Yuki won’t mind if she was bitten by another vampire, like Kaname, pointing out that he’s always known that Yuki likes Kaname. Yuki is upset upon hearing this and runs back to her room. As she sleeps on the coach, she dreams of standing on top of a web of blood while a little girl circles her, saying that she’s afraid and the voice of a woman asks her to wake up. A flashback shows that after taking Yuuki to Chairman Cross’ house, Yuuki was given a pudding but doesn’t seem to know that she can eat it. When Kaname tried to spoonfed her, however, Yuuki became transfixed at his fangs and reaches out her hand, trying to touch them.

Unfortunately, this brought back the memory of her being attacked by the vampire so Yuuki screamed in horror. Because of this, Kaname decided to leave to avoid scaring her further. After Kaname left, Cross explained to the girl that he’d rename her as "Yuuki" and gave her the meaning behind the name. A few weeks later, Kaname came in a hurry, thinking that the vampire who attacked Yuuki had come to Cross’ house. As it turned out, Cross simply lied so Kaname would come to the house. Kaname was about to leave when Cross points out that Yuuki put her own clothes although she’s completely wrong in how to do it. Kaname for some reason finds this amusing and this was the point where Yuuki stopped being afraid of him. Fast forward one year later, Yuuki was waiting outside the house despite the fact that it’s snowy that day. She looked excited when Kaname arrived, telling him that today is her birthday. It’s one year anniversary of the time when Kaname saved her. Fast forward a few years later, Yuuki asked Cross if Kaname is a vampire. Cross confirmed this and asked Yuuki not to tell anyone since it’s secret since not many people know their existence.

Yuuki believed that Kaname is not like other vampires and Cross agreed saying that some vampires lives peacefully with humans. At one point, Yuuki even went to the city to greet Kaname. Although she was afraid of being attacked by a vampire, Yuuki told Kaname if she’s with him, she won’t be scared. However, her faith was shattered when one night Cross came home with Zero and told her that his family were killed by evil vampires. One night, Yuuki found Zero trying to claw his own neck. In the present day, Zero has just finished his gun training and starts to touch the tattoo on his neck. He remembers how back then he told Yuuki that feels disgusted because he can still feel the stench of ‘that woman’. Yuuki was horrified to see this and tried to stop him, assuring the guy that she’ll look out for him. One day, however, Kaname came to Cross’ house again. Yuuki tries to introduce the two but Zero looks horrified the minute he saw Kaname, as if he can sense the vampire in Kaname. Zero immediately grabbed a butter knife and tried to attack Kaname but the older guy easily blocked him off. Back then Zero claimed that Kaname smells exactly like ‘that woman’.

Kaname grabbed the knife that Zero used to stab him and told him that he’s wrong. When Yuuki tried to cheer Zero up that night, he slapped her hand because it’s the hand that has touched that vampire. Nevertheless, Yuuki tried to convince him that Kaname is a kind vampire who saved her from an evil vampire. Despite this, Zero was unconvinced and believed that they’re all the same. Fast forward a few weeks later, Cross informed Yuuki and Zero of his intention of setting up a night class. When he explains that the night class will be composed of vampires, Zero snapped. Kaname then appeared, explaining that the intention of the night class is to promote peace between human and vampires and to teach vampires to be moderate. Zero dislikes the idea but Cross assured him it’d be okay since Kaname will be in night class and be responsible for the other vampires. Back then Zero pointed out that if Kaname betrayed the plan, it’ll be all over. Fast forward one year later, Yuuki couldn’t resist the idea of coming to an old building used as temporary residence by the vampires. When she opened the door, Ichijou greeted her, saying Kaname always talks about her.

Having said that, he told her that she needs to go back. When Ichijou was not paying attention, however, Yuuki managed to sneak into the dormitory and waited for Kaname at the stairs. In the process, she saw Aidou, Cain, Ruka, and the others walking on the top floor. Although they wonder why a human child is inside the dorm, they decide to ignore her since they didn’t want to create trouble before entering the school. Because Yuuki was tired, she ended up sleeping on the stairs and almost became a pray for one unknown student. Kaname, however, scold the guy, reminding him that the school has specific rule. When he put his coat on Yuuki, Kaname almost unable to resist the temptation to bite her neck. Despite this, he managed to stop himself and took Yuuki back to his room. When Yuuki woke up, she saw Kaname sucking Ruka’s neck until the girl passed out. She immediately ran away, unaware that Kaname intentionally wanted her to see this. Outside the house, a disturbed Yuuki met Zero, who’s been asked by Cross to look for her. Upon seeing other vampires looking at them from the dorm, Zero decided to take Yuuki away from them.

It was then that Zero told her that vampires are just beasts in the shape of humans. This includes Kaname. Yuuki, however, refused to believe this, claiming that Kaname saved her life. Because of this, she thinks Kaname is different from other vampires. In the present time, Zero finds Yuuki sleeping on the couch when he hears her asking for Kaname. When he puts a blanket on Yuuki, however, he notices her neck and upon touching it, his bloodlust starts to run out of control again. Zero manages to control his lust but Kaname then appears in front of the door, wanting to talk to him. Because Zero leaves the room earlier than Kaname, Yuuki only sees Kaname’s figure, assuming that Kaname was the one who put the blanket on her. Kaname appears and tells Zero that the reason Zero is still around is because he wants Zero to be of service to Yuuki as her ’shield’. The episode ends with Yuuki saying that something in her changed that day but there’s one thing that remains unchanged: the part of her that likes Kaname.

Impression

After seeing this episode, I can’t help but wonder if there’s more to the vampire/humans alliance that Cross had in mind. I think if one sees it from Zero’s POV, the alliance seems like a dangerous idea. To begin with, vampires are hard to control. We have seen how difficult it was for them to restrain their bloodlust. On top of this, the entire alliance relies on trusting Kaname. Since Kaname is a pure-blood, it’s hard not to be suspicious of his motives and the possibility that he might have a hidden agenda. Judging from the way the other vampires follow him faithfully, it won’t be too difficult for Kaname to kill all of the students in the school if he wants to do so. In addition to this, the restraint that the other vampires have shown thus far is pretty conditional in that they seem to do it not because they like it but because they have a lot of respect for Kaname. Even if Kaname is sincere, what would happen if he’s dead? Would the other vampires respect the treaty or would they go on killing spree? After watching last week’s episode, I realized that the vampire hunters association does not seem to be that keen on the alliance either. It makes me wonder if Cross has other plan with the alliance apart from ensuring that both humans and vampires will co-exist with each other peacefully.

Moving along, I am rather disappointed to see Yuuki murmuring Kaname’s name even though Zero was the one who put the blanket on her in the present time. But after last week’s story, this is just a way for the writers to balance the romantic triangle. It’s also nice to see the parallel of both men placing a blanket on top of her although I fail to draw any kind of meaning out of both scenes. Maybe the past and the future protector for Yuuki? At any rate, I don’t think this episode moves the plot that much. It basically just re-established the facts that Yuuki has a crush on Kaname but feels kinship towards Zero. I also think this episode made Kaname a bit more likable or rather, his younger version was likable. That feeling, however, evaporated as quickly as it came the minute he started to tell Zero that the only reason he’s not dead is so he can be some kind of a bodyguard for Yuuki. Anyway, at the moment the one thing that I’m really looking forward to is actually not the resolution to the triangle but the arrival of ‘that woman’ that Zero referred to in this episode. I think the main reason that I started to like this series was after I read that part of the story. I think the character design for one of the upcoming female characters featured in that arc is unbelievably good.

Ouran High Schoo Host Club ep 26 ( end)

Friday, May 16th, 2008

The episode begins with Haruhi leaving her house in a hurry, telling her father that she’s not having breakfast. Later on inside the Salon, Kyoya is in the middle of serving Eclair, who recognises him as the son of the Ootori family. She thinks it’s unfortunate that Kyouya won’t inherit the family’s business regardless of his hard work. She also asks Kyouya how much debt Haruhi still has with the Host Club. Kyouya calls Haruhi over, telling her that Eclair wants her company. Eclair tells Haruhi that she notices that Tamaki is fond of her. This makes Haruhi wonder if Eclair is jealous. Eclair doesn’t answer Haruhi’s question and instead tells Haruhi that she ordered Tamaki not to come to the Host Club again. Elsewhere in the Salon, the twins are in the middle of talking about Tamaki’s decision. Kyouya who sees this asks them not to stand around because they have customers here. He believes that making the customer happy is the best that they can do right now. Kyouya then approaches Haruhi and tells her that Eclair has paid off all of her debts. Because of this, if she wants to, she can stop being a Host. Haruhi is surprised to hear this and finds herself unable to say anything. At the same time, Kyouya’s father comes over and tells his son that although young people often believe that time is limitless, in reality this is not correct. He believes that it’s useless to waste time on worthless activity like this. Haruhi snaps upon hearing this and tells Kyouya’s father that Kyouya and the Host Club work hard so that other people can enjoy themselves. She believes that by doing this, they enrich their own feelings. Because of this, she asks Kyouya’s father if he thinks making other people happy is a worthless effort. In addition to this, she believes that Kyouya is a fine person. Kyouya’s father does not answer Haruhi. However, as he left the area, he realises that Haruhi is the scholarship student that Kyouya told him. Inside the chairman’s office, Tamaki’s father and Tamaki’s grandmother are discussing the threat that is Grand Tonnere Company. Old hag believes that Suoh family will prosper more and more if they make the Tonnere their relatives. Tamaki’s father reminds the old hag that Tamaki has no desire to become a part of the Suoh family and wonders how she managed to persuade Tamaki. Old hag reveals that if Tamaki is engaged to Eclair, she’ll allow Tamaki to see his mother again. In other words, old hag wants Tamaki to pay for his father’s mistake. Meanwhile, Tamaki is in the music room while Eclair is taking shower with her precious opera glass. Once Eclair finishes her shower, the two hear a phone call and realises that it comes from Tamaki’s cell phone. Upon grabbing the phone, Eclair realises that there is a picture of Tamaki and Haruhi on the phone. A flashback reveals that during their conversation in the Salon, Eclair asked Haruhi if she’s Tamaki’s lover. Eclair was relieved when Haruhi denied this, thinking that Haruhi has no relation to Tamaki. Haruhi, however, told Eclair that just because she’s not Tamaki’s lover it doesn’t mean that she has no relation with him. In the present time, Eclair decides not to answer the phone and instead drops it into a fish tank. She tells Tamaki that it’ll be better if he’s not in contact with the Host Club members again because then he can leave without regrets. All of a sudden, there is a knock on the door and a butler comes in saying that a guest has come to visit them. Tamaki is surprised upon seeing Kyouya’s father entering the room and vice versa. Tamaki immediately apologises to Kyouya’s father, explaining that he’s the one who invites Kyouya to join the Host Club. He also wonders why Kyouya’s father is in here. Kyouya’s father explains that the Tonnere family will purchase his medical equipment company soon. Because of this, Kyouya won’t get the company. Eclair suddenly tells Kyouya’s father that there is something that she’d like to ask from him. Back to Haruhi, she’s now dressed up in the special dress for the party, wondering why she gets to do this. Hikari explains that the reason is because there will be a special parade but Haruhi tells him what she meant was why she’s the only one who has to dress up as a girl. Hikaru assures her it’s going to be okay saying that it’s just ‘cosplay’. Haruhi doesn’t believe him and accuses Hikaru of lying. Meanwhile, Kyouya tries to contact Tamaki but can’t seem to reach him. Because of this, he decides to call the 2nd house where Tamaki usually lives and finds out from Tamaki’s maid, Shima, that Tamaki is on his way to Paris. She explains that Suoh family decides to pardon Tamaki’s mother. In addition to this, Tamaki feels guilty for burdening the others. These are why Tamaki made the decision. Kyouya relays the news to the rest of the group much to their surprise. Shima then tells Kyouya that in her opinion, Tamaki’s mother won’t be happy if Tamaki leaves Ouran like this. Kyouya then notices that Tamaki is in a sports car with Eclair so the Host Club decides to go after him. When they try to use Kyouya’s car, however, the Ootori secret police try to stop them from leaving the area. Thankfully Mori then appears with a carriage, shocking the police. He, Hunny, and Kyouya stays behind to fight the police while the twins and Haruhi hop on to catch Tamaki before he can get to the airport. Kyouya tells Haruhi that he entrusts ‘that idiot’ to her. The police try to stop the carriage but they are in fear when they realise that they are against Hunny and Mori. Hunny, Mori, and Kyouya then beat up the secret police senseless. At the same time, Hikaru is rushing through the woods using the carriage so Kaoru tries to warn him about the danger. Hikaru argues that he has to do this because he wants Tamaki back. Hikaru points out that they can meet Haruhi and get along well with everyone else because of the Host Club. Because of this, he doesn’t want the club to end so suddenly like this. Unfortunately, because Hikaru is in a rush, the carriage hits a road bump and turns over, throwing Hikaru to a Pumpkin field. Hikaru realises that he’s injured and can’t control the carriage again so he wonders if things are really going to end like this. Upon hearing Hikaru’s words, Haruhi remembers what her father said before she left to school that day: when she has to do her best, it’s not good for her to hesitate. With this in her mind, Haruhi takes off her wig, throws off her costume and rides on the carriage on her own. Meanwhile inside the car, Eclair points out that Tamaki has been silent. She thinks that as a host, Tamaki should be livelier. In return Tamaki asks Eclair if she’s really okay getting herself engaged to someone she recently knew.

Before Eclair can answer, the two of them hear the sound of horse steps approaching them. They are shocked when they see Haruhi coming with the carriage. Tamaki asks Haruhi to stop right away because it’s dangerous. In return, Haruhi asks Tamaki to return because everyone in the Host Club doesn’t want him to leave. Tamaki tells Haruhi that he’s bothering everyone in the Host Club. Upon hearing this Haruhi tells Tamaki that he really is dumb. She can’t believe that after all of the times he is together with them, he still can’t tell the difference between people joking around and people being serious. She then points out that everyone like the Host Club and admits that she also feels the same way about it. Haruhi then offers her hand to Tamaki, asking him to jump into the carriage. However, before Tamaki can jump, Eclair tries to stop him. Meanwhile, because Haruhi is not paying attention to the horse/carriage, they veer off and hit the bridge.

Haruhi falls off the carriage and plunges into the river on her left hand side. Eclair immediately releases her hand on Tamaki upon seeing this. Tamaki thanks her and gives her a smile before jumping off into the river to save Haruhi. Tamaki then manages to catch Haruhi’s hand mid air and pulls her into his embrace as they fall together into the river. Not long after this, the rest of the Host Club arrive to save the two. Eclair who sees this asks her driver to move along. The driver tells her that he remembers how Eclair often heard from her maid about the maid’s son, who can play piano so well. Eclair remembers how she once asked the maid about the boy, which was Tamaki. She thinks Tamaki is stupid for passing up the opportunity to meet his mother again. Having said that, she’s happy that he actually smiled just for her. As Eclair left the area, the camera lingers on the Opera glasses that she always has with her. Eclair has left it on the bridge.

That night, there’s a dance party for everyone. Haruhi gets dizzy after Hunny spins her far too often but Mori was there to catch her. Inside the chairman’s office, Kyouya’s father tells Tamaki’s father that someone else ended up purchasing the Ootori medical equipment company before the Tonnerre can get their hands on it. All management rights have been returned to Kyouya’s father. When Kyouya’s father investigated this, he found out that the buyer is a student investor who calls himself "K.O". It doesn’t take him long to figure out that "K.O" is Kyouya Ootori, his own son. Tamaki’s father thinks the entire story sounds fearsome but he kind of expecting it from Kyouya who he thinks is an excellent student. In exchange, Kyouya’s father praises Tamaki. He knew all along that Kyouya is better than his brothers. However, after seeing Kyouya doing a takeover on his own and returning the company back, Kyouya’s father realises that Kyouya probably finds something more valuable thanks to Tamaki.

Outside the school, Haruhi dances with Kaoru, hits Hikaru’s hand and apologises for it. Haruhi then moves to dance with Tamaki but Kyouya appears and takes the lead. Tamaki goes berserk as usual so eventually Kyouya returns Haruhi to Tamaki. Back in the office, Tamaki’s father thinks he and Kyouya’s father should be friends just like their sons. Kyouya’s father agrees but he has one condition: he wants Haruhi to be Kyouya’s future wife. Tamaki’s father immediately changes his mind, saying that he knew it’s impossible to be friends with Kyouya’s father. While everyone watches the firework, Tamaki explains that Ouran High prioritises prestige and money before anything else. Since rich people have a lot of time, Ouran Host Club is about guys profiting from rich female students with their good looks while entertaining them. The episode then ends with a shot of the 3rd music room being opened, Haruhi then asks the visitors to come in and play if they feel like it because everyone in the Host Club is sincerely waiting for them to come.

Ouran High Schoo Host Club ep 25

Friday, May 16th, 2008

It’s the 43rd Ouran Festival so everyone is busy preparing for the opening ceremony. After hearing Hikaru ordering workers to place table into the Salon, Haruhi tells Kyouya that in school festivals, students normally everything themselves. Kyouya, however, tells her that is for normal school but in Ouran, school festival is more about planning and leadership. That’s because most of the students here are future leaders of their respective family business. Tamaki, Mori, and Hunny then arrive with a carriage, asking her to join them in the special parade. While inside the carriage, Kaoru makes a comment about Hikaru’s ability to handle the carriage. Hikaru tells him that Kaoru should have practiced with him. Tamaki tells the not-impressed Haruhi that tomorrow’s parade will involve medieval French outfit. There is even a costume specifically made for Haruhi. Once the clock tower chimes, several supporting characters can be seen all around the school. Inside the Salon, the Host Club opens a special event for the general public. This time around, everyone is on their best behaviour so that they’ll impress the students’ parents. Tamaki manages to charm the pants off a disgruntled older lady by telling her that the purpose of the Host Club is to spend time with beautiful lady like herself. Meanwhile, some parents assume that Mori and Hunny are siblings when the former asks the later to button his shirt. The twins, on the other hand, try to attract sympathy by pretending that they’re lonely because they’ve been neglected by their parents. Kyouya, on the other hand, is busy explaining to a parent that everyday they cosplay in each country/race’s costume in order to learn the social culture of said country/race. Haruhi, however, thinks that the entire thing is an overpriced event, causing Tamaki to rush to her side, claiming that this is a campaign to appeal to a wide group of people. Kyouya, however, agrees with Haruhi, explaining that they’ve gone over budget this time around. Apparently the carriage that Tamaki wants had to be imported from France. He points out that Tamaki’ selfishness causes them a lot of problem. Tamaki protests this, asking Haruhi if wanting to make everyone happy is a selfishness. Haruhi ignores him and approaches a girl, asking her if there is something she’d like to order. The girl, however, simply asks Haruhi if she’s a Host Club member. Tamaki’s father, the Chairman, then arrives at the Salon. When Tamaki calls the Chairman, "Father", however, the Chairman asks Tamaki to call him "Chairman" while they’re at school. Tamaki’s father then apologises to Kyouya for the problem that Tamaki has caused. Kyouya denies that it was any problem and asks the Chairman if he has any order. Tamaki, who tries to listen to the conversation, falls down when he hears his father asking for Haruhi.

Haruhi is surprised to meet the Chairman, thinking that he’s not like Tamaki at all. She, however, changes her mind when he tries to charm her, asking her to call him "Oji-sama" (Uncle) instead of "Chairman". She also asks Haruhi to come to ‘Uncle’ if she encounters any problem. Tamaki is jealous to see this and asks his father to move that hand away from Haruhi. Their conversation, however, comes to abrupt end when all of a sudden they hear a loud slapping noise. It turns out Kyouya’s father has slapped his own son. He’s not happy with his son’s involvement in the Host Club, asking Kyouya if this is Kyouya’s attempt to embarass him. He then approaches Tamaki’s father, apologising for the unsightly scene. Tamaki’s father, however, tells Kyouya’s father that he’s being harsh on Kyouya even though he’s a good kid. He believes Kyouya’s father is in trouble and it’s only a matter of time before mass communication starts to make a fuss about it.

Meanwhile, the other members are concerned about Kyouya. Haruhi wonders if the reason Kyouya got hit is because of the Host Club. Kyouya, however, tells the other that he’s okay and kind of expected it. After Kyouya left, Tamaki feels bad about the incident, wondering if it’s all the Host Club’s fault. Tamaki’s father then tells his son that this is the price of his selfishness. He wants to know what Tamaki will do from now on, if he wants to become the successor to the Suoh family. The chairman then walks over and lectures him about the price of his selfishness. When he sees Tamaki looking at Haruhi talking to customers, the Chairman asks Tamaki what he plans to do now, asking Tamaki if he wants to succeed the Suou family. The Chairman believes that this is a difficult choice and even he himself still doesn’t know the answer. Because of this, he asks Tamaki if he really knows what he wants before pointing out that Tamaki’s grandmother has arrived.

Haruhi is surprised to see Tamaki’s grandmother making an appearance and even more so when Hunny tells her that he hates that old woman. Hunny doesn’t need to explain this because when Tamaki greets his grandma, the old hag asks him not to touch her, even goes as far as calling Tamaki ‘filthy’. She then calls out for Eclair, the girl that Haruhi saw before. Old hag basically wants Tamaki to escort Eclair to see the school festival today and tomorrow. Tamaki at first hesitates but eventually agree to her request. A few hours later, Tamaki has not returned to the Salon, causing everyone else to wonder where he could be. When the twins wonder who Eclair could be, Renge admits that she knows her. Eclair Tonnerre is the 3rd daughter of distinguished family with successful business in France. Kyoya confirms this, saying that the Tonnerre family have recently been buying Japanese companies. However, he has no idea why Eclair comes to see Tamaki.

Meanwhile, Tamaki and Eclair are in the middle of riding a Gondola in the middle of a Venice imitation created by the Art club. Eclair doesn’t seem to enjoy this and instead wants Tamaki to play piano for her. The two goes to the music room and Tamaki starts to play for her. Haruhi, who’s in the middle of changing her clothes hear this and presses her back against the door, alarming Eclair to her presence. While Tamaki plays the piano, Eclair asks him if this is the room that Tamaki and the Host Club normally use and points out how everyone seems to get along well with each other. Tamaki points out how they, the Host Club, are like family. In response, Eclair points out that Tamaki’s real family is not in Japan and that he’s just playing ‘house’ with the Host Club members. She then starts to guilt-trip Tamaki, claiming that his selfishness causes everyone to be miserable. She points out that Kyouya got hit by his father because of this.

This statement stops Tamaki and makes him remembers what Kyouya said beforehand. Tamaki starts to wonder if all Host Club members sacrifice their own life to be in the Host Club. For example, he wonders if Haruhi sacrifices her study time to become lawyer to come to the Club. Haruhi then barges in and explains that she just changed her clothes. She also points out that everyone else is unhappy that Tamaki left the Salon. Eclair apologises but Tamaki right now belongs to her and wonders why Haruhi looks jealous. Tamaki becomes excited to hear this, setting off the lightbulb inside Eclair’s head (she realises that Haruhi is a girl). Haruhi denies that she’s jealous and excuses herself for interfering. Tamaki wants to chase Haruhi but Eclair stops him, asking him if he likes that Mamedanuki (Dilligent Racoon). Tamaki is offended that Eclair calls his ‘daughter’ that way but Eclair pushes him off to a couch and tells him that she can give what he wants the most.

A dejected Haruhi returns to the Salon to the cheer of everyone. When they wonder where Tamaki could be, however, Haruhi tells them that Tamaki is in the 3rd music room with Eclair. Her acid tone makes everyone thinks that she’s jealous. Haruhi denies this and simply tells them that Tamaki is being irresponsible. Kyouya believes that this is because of the order from Tamaki’s grandma, causing Haruhi to remember the way the old hag gave Tamaki the cold shoulder. Because of this, she asks the other members why she behaves like this. Everyone looks around and eventually decides to tell Haruhi the background of Tamaki’s family. Apparently around 20 years ago, the head of the Suoh family died young. Because of this, Tamaki’s grandma married her son (Tamaki’s father) off to a girl for business purpose, turning him into the Suoh successor. However, a few years later, Tamaki’s father fell in love with another woman when he was in France.

From their union, Tamaki was born. Tamaki’s father wanted to divorce his legal wife and married the woman he met in France. However, his mother opposed the idea. Since Tamaki’s mother’s health was poor and could not live in Japan, Tamaki was raised in France until he was 14. Unfortunately, Tamaki’s mother’s family experienced a business failure and accumulated large debt. At the same time, the Suoh has no heir in the family. Tamaki’s grandma offered to give money to Tamaki’s mother so she can live comfortably. In exchange, Tamaki must come to Japan. Moreover, he and his mother are not allowed to see each other again. Kyouya explains that although the Chairman is the head of the Suoh family, the one who’s really in charge is old hag. Since Tamaki’s mother had a weak body, she wouldn’t be able to survive without the aid of the Suoh family. Because of this, Tamaki told his devastated mother that he’d go to Japan alone.

After the incident, either because she was sad or because she regretted accepting money in exchange for Tamaki, Tamaki’s mother moved away and disappeared. Even now, her whereabouts is still not known. Upon hearing the story, haruhi remembers how during cremation, she once asked his father if she would never see her mother again. Haruhi is surprised about the whole thing because Tamaki is always happy so she didn’t expect that his past is that harrowing. She wonders if she’d be able not to hold a grudge against the grandma if she were Tamaki. Kyouya tells Haruhi that although it’s easy to feel sorry for Tamaki, he’s glad that Tamaki is the way he is now. He thinks Tamaki will be okay. All of a sudden, however, Tamaki appears in the Salon with Eclair. He tells them that he has an important news to tell everyone: he’s getting engaged to Eclair Tonerru. In addition to this, he will dismantle the Host Club after the Ouran Festival is over.

Ouran High Schoo Host Club ep 24

Friday, May 16th, 2008

The episode begins with the Host Club having a Kotatsu-themed party, surprising some of the guests because this is the first time they saw a Kotatsu. Tamaki points out that Kotatsu is normally required in Winter but they decide to have it in advanced for their visitors. Because of this, he welcomes everyone to the Host Club’s Kotatsu "happy circle" service. Haruhi is not impressed by this. She wonders if Kotatsu really is that interesting and if this ‘Kotatsu service’ was Tamaki’s idea. Kyouya confirms Haruhi’s guess and asks her what is it that bothers her. Haruhi tells Kyouya that she knew Tamaki and Kyouya set up this Host Club but she wonders why someone as cool as Kyouya wants to be in this crazy club. Much to Haruhi’s surprise, Kyouya tells her that the reason is because the club is crazy. The story started 2 years ago, when he was a middle school student. Back then, Kyouya was approached by another student while he was walking alone.

The student then told Kyouya that his father attended the party to commemorate the completion of Ootori’s hospital yesterday and got to meet some distinguished people. He thanked Kyouya because of this. Kyouya introduced the student as the son of a major electrical maker. Another student then appeared and asked Kyouya if he became a student president again. Kyouya pointed out that this boy is the son of a major department store owner. More and more students then came and sucked up to Kyouya. Kyouya himself was no different from them. When a student asked if Kyouya wants to come to his villa in the mountain to do star-gazing, Kyouya immediately agreed because he had interest in establishing business with the boy’s father. Kyouya’s older sister, Fuyumi was surprised that Kyouya would go to a mountain just for that reason. Kyouya pointed out that his host also expects him to come. He believed that this is a pure ‘give’ and ‘take’ situation.

Fuyumi argued that the motivation is anything but pure and believed that maybe those who invited Kyouya really wants Kyouya to see some stars. She thought it’s romantic to deepen friendship under the starlit sky. While saying this, Fuyumi tried to tidy up Kyouya’s closet but ended up making a mess of it. Because of this, Kyouya asked his sister not to mess with his closet. Fuyumi, however, argued that she feels like sorting Kyouya’s clothes. Cue in more mess on the floor. Fuyumi knew that their father is strict and therefore Kyouya probably feels a heavy pressure from the old man. Having said that, because he’s different from his elder brother, she believed he can take things easy. In response, Kyouya told his sister that he knows that he is not the successor to Ootori’s business. He is not the one who can get on the route that will easily take him up to the top just like his brothers. He has expectations to respond to and can’t just stand up ahead of his brothers.

Kyouya compared his responsibility within the family to drawing a perfect picture on a canvass within a splendid frame. When Fuyumi asks Kyouya if he’s enjoying it, Kyouya pointed out that it has nothing to do with enjoying it or not enjoying it. Kyouya pointed out how after graduating from the medical school, his eldest brother ended up working at the hospital just like his father. His second brother acquired MBA after graduated from the medical school and ended up lending support to his older brother. And then there was Kyouya…who one day was asked by his father to be a good friend of the Suoh family’s son who just moved in to the school. Kyouya revealed that Tamaki is the child that the chairman had when he was overseas. After divorcing his real wife, the chairman had no other child so he decided to make the son of his lover into his successor. Fast forward a few days later, Kyouya and the vice president met the newly arrived Tamaki.

Tamaki immediately charmed the vice-president after he praised her straight, beautiful hair. He told her that just like her hair, her heart must be beautiful as well. After a light introduction, Kyouya decided to show Tamaki the rest of the school. He, however, was caught off-guard when Tamaki wanted to know if he has a Kotatsu inside his house. Tamaki is of the opinion that sitting on the floor is a charming culture so he promised himself to try it once he arrived in Japan. Unfortunately, his house is western-styled. Upon hearing this, Kyouya immediately likened Tamaki to one of those foreigners who are obsessed with Japanese culture. He then apologised to Tamaki, claiming that his family doesn’t have a Kotatsu either. Tamaki immediately became depressed upon hearing this, asking Kyouya if Kotatsu is not the symbol of a family’s ‘happy circle’. This involves putting your leg inside the kotatsu and engage in a little argument with family members.

In order to stop Tamaki from being upset, Kyouya told the guy that he will build a Kotatsu in his Japanese-styled room. Tamaki suddenly cheered up again, calling Kyouya his best friend. Because of this he asked if they can call each other by first name from now on. Kyouya tried to say "No" but his objection was drowned out by Tamaki yelling out "Bravo, Kyouya!! Mon Ami, Mon Ami". Fuyumi was surprised when she found out that Kyouya becomes Tamaki’s best friend after only one day. Kyouya told Fuyumi that maybe Tamaki does not understand the meaning of ‘best friend’. He also wanted Fuyumi not to mess his closet anymore. The day after, Tamaki came to Kyouya to ask for his help: he wants to go to Kyoto. He admitted that he got sidetracked Kotatsu. However, the first thing he actually wanted to do after he comes to Japan is to go to Kyouto. Tamaki basically wanted to go and see: The Great Buddha in Nara, Goryokaku, Shiisaa and Namahage.

Kyouya pointed out that all of those are not located in Kyoto. Tamaki is shocked by this revelation and becomes depressed again. Because of this, Kyouya offered to take Tamaki to all of those places one by one. He pointed out that they can go to Kyoto next week, then on the next holiday, they can go to Okinawa. Tamaki becomes happy once again, this time proclaiming Kyouya as "God" and "The Great Buddha". Kyouya is amused by the fact that after only knowing Tamaki for 2 days, his status has been promoted to ‘God’. Because of this, one week later Kyouya and Tamaki visited Kinkakuji (The Golden Pavillion) in Kyoto. While Tamaki takes a lot of portraits of the temple, Kyouya made an observation that Tamaki somehow managed to adapt himself into the class. At one point, Fuyumi realised that Kyouya is still awake at night and was surprised when she found out that Kyouya was reading Hokkaido sightseeing guide.

When Fuyumi asked why Kyouya didn’t just get a driver, Kyouya told her that it’s because Tamaki didn’t want to use driver. He then complained about Tamaki, claiming that when they were in Kyoto, Tamaki insisted on seeing Daimonji even though it’s still Spring. And in another instance, while they were eating Okinawa Soba, Tamaki suddenly wanted to compare the soba to Shinshuu Soba. And when Tamaki didn’t get what he wants, he’d apologises for being selfish but did it with that kicked puppy look. Despite this, Kyouya felt that the preparation for the next trip is perfect. Unfortunately for Kyouya, Tamaki refused to go to Hokkaido that week. Tamaki believed they should be studying for their upcoming exam. He, however, agreed to go with Kyouya once the exam is over and advised Kyouya to study a little bit as well. Kyouya was livid to hear this but he managed to calm down by reminding himself that Tamaki is the son of Suoh chairman.

After noticing Kyouya’s messy room, however, Fuyumi thought to herself that this is the first time she saw Kyouya having ‘fun’. Kyouya didn’t see Tamaki after this but during a weekend, Fuyumi told him that she’s finally met his friend. Inside the house, Kyouya realised that Tamaki is in the middle of playing piano for his family. Fuyumi claimed that hearing the song makes her want to cry. Kyouya admitted to being surprised when he first heard Tamaki’s piano performance. He even shed some tears while listening to the song that Tamaki plays. After Tamaki finished his performance, he apologised to Kyouya for coming in without warning. Kyouya told himself that in that case, Tamaki should go home right away. Instead of saying that, however, Kyouya asked Tamaki about his preparation for exam. Tamaki didn’t answer the question and instead made a comment about the spacious nature of Kyouya’s house. He wondered if it’s bigger than his house in France.

Kyouya told Tamaki that he doesn’t know about Tamaki’s house in France but he believes Suoh main mansion is very big. Much to Kyouya’s surprise, however, Tamaki admitted that he doesn’t know because he lives in a smaller 2nd mansion. Tamaki then changed the conversation by asking Kyouya if he’s the future successor to Ootori’s business. Kyouya is annoyed by this questions and wondered if Tamaki is looking for a fight. Despite this, Kyouya honestly told Tamaki that he can’t possibly be one since as Tamaki saw before, he has two older brothers. Kyouya believed that he’ll most likely end up working for his brother. Tamaki admitted to being surprised after hearing this because he thought that Kyouya will be a much greedier person than this. He also guessed that Kyouya is not happy with his current status quo. Tamaki wondered if it’s okay for Kyouya to give up like this. Kyouya replied by saying that the problem is not whether he gives up or not.

As he clenched his hand, Kyouya told Tamaki that the reason is because it’s been decided that way. He then rudely told Tamaki that surely someone who inherited a house by default should understand this. Kyouya immediately shocked upon hearing his own words because he just revealed his true nature to Tamaki. Tamaki, however, informed Kyouya that it has not been decided that he’ll be the one who’ll become Suoh successor. He explained that he’s hated by his grandma. Because of this, he’s not their heir at all right now. And although he has no interest in his father’s job, Tamaki believed that he has good looks which he can use. Failing that, he can use his intelligence to become a scholar or else, he can build an animal kingdom. Kyouya was annoyed upon hearing Tamaki’s light-hearted response and finally snapped at Tamaki. Kyouya threw the cofee table and gripped Tamaki’s shirt, asking the other guy how he managed to give up so easily.

Kyouya told Tamaki that he and Tamaki are different. Kyouya believed that as long as one tries hard, one possesses the chance to go upwards. Because of this, he wondered why Tamaki doesn’t try harder or use Tamaki’s own advantageous position. Kyouya believed that if he has power, he won’t lose to his brother. However, because he’s just the 3rd son, he’s not allowed to go ‘beyond the frame’. In retaliation, Tamaki told Kyouya that the one who’s not trying hard is Kyouya. If Kyouya wants to exceed his brother, he should just go and do it. Tamaki believed that the one who decided to give up is actually Kyouya. Kyouya was stunned to hear this because he realised that this is the truth. An imaginary brush was suddenly seen outside the picture frame, painting a bright red colour. Tamaki then changed the topic conversation and asked Kyouya where the Kotatsu is. Kyouya laughed after hearing this and told Tamaki that Kotatsu is for Winter use.

The camera then shows a shot of an imaginary painting inside Kyouya. This time around, however, the paint has gone out of the frame and creates a large red flowers on the wall/ceiling. 4 months later, Tamaki came to Kyouya’s house to tell him a great idea: he wanted them to set up a club as soon as they enter high school. He believed they can harness their good looks and the name of the club will be the Host Club. At first Kyouya rejected the idea and told Tamaki that if he’s sleepy, he should go to sleep. Tamaki, however, didn’t give up and started to list the other members that he wants: Hunny, Mori, and the twins. Kyouya told himself that the more he heard the plan, the more trivial it sounded. However, when he shares Tamaki’s world, Kyouya felt that he too will be able to see a painting/scenery that is different from the one that was in front of him. The episode ends with Kyouya smiling towards the green tea in front of him just like his sister, Fuyumi.

Ouran High Schoo Host Club ep 23

Friday, May 16th, 2008

Continuing from the previous episode, this one begins with Kasanoda apologising to Haruhi before fleeing out of the change room. Much to his shock, the twins appear and ask him if he saw it. Because he panics, Kasanoda stammers and keeps changing his answer from saying that he didn’t see anything to saying that he saw on a glance to finally realising that he did see it. Tamaki suddenly turns white upon hearing this confession. Hunny suddenly appears in front of Kasanoda, telling the poor guy that a man who can’t tell the truth is a trash. This traumatises Kasanoda even more because he didn’t expect someone who’s supposed to be a “Lovely Item” to be so scary. Kasanoda eventually calms down and ask the twin if Haruhi really is a woman. The statement sends Tamaki into a shock to the point that he imagines himself as a howling tyrannosaurus. He’s even more shocked when Kasanoda admits that he saw Haruhi wearing only her underwear.

The twins completely lost their temper upon finding out about this and ready to re-enact the bloody climax from Onikakushi arc of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni using a baseball bat and presumably, Kasanoda’s head. Kyouya, however, stops them because he thinks it’s difficult to cover up a crime. The twins wonder how Kyouya can be so calm, asking him to look at Tamaki, who is in extreme shock. After seeing this, Kyouya tells Kasanoda that now it comes to this, they have no choice but to ‘talk’ about it. He explains that due to a minor circumstance, Haruhi had no choice but to conceal the fact that she’s a girl. He admits that they have no right to stop Kasanoda from telling others about this. However, if he does this, Kyouya will unleash Ootori private police on him. Haruhi then comes out of the changing room, asking the Host Club members to stop threatening Kasanoda. She tells the guy that she doesn’t mind if he wants to tell this to others.

Later on that night, Kasanoda refuses to come out of his room or eat his dinner. Tetsuya believes that Kasanoda is troubled by love because when he brings food to Kasanoda’s room, he saw Kasanoda picking flower petals while saying “I like her, I love her”. Kasanoda’s henchmen are surprised to hear this and even more so when they think that the person that Kasanoda is in love with is a man. Meanwhile, Kasanoda is tortured by his own imagination of Haruhi saying words that she said before before eventually deciding to protect Haruhi’s secret. The next day, Kasanoda arrives at the Host Club, surprising all of the female customers. Their surprise, however, turns into excitement when Kasanoda tells them that he’s looking for Haruhi. The girls immediately assume that Kasanoda and Haruhi are involved. Renge suddenly appears out of nowhere on top of her stage and the fangirls immediately ask her if Kasanoda really swings that way.

Kasanoda is shocked to hear this and tries to give them his human blizzard eyes but he fails to do so because his attempt is countered by the moe fire of yaoi fangirls. Just then Haruhi appears carrying a tea for Kasanoda. Kasanoda can’t help himself from blushing when Haruhi sits next to him and pours the tea. The twins become jealous and ask Kyouya to get rid of Kasanoda. Kyouya, however, refuses to do this since Kasanoda promises to protect Haruhi’s secret. Moreover, he attracts their customers’ attention. The twins are not happy with this and decide to send Tamaki to interfere. Unfortunately for them, Tamaki is too shocked to do anything but playing with a toy that Haruhi gets when she bought instant coffee. Because of this the twins tell Tamaki that if this continues, Haruhi will become “Ane-san”, a Yakuza wife. Tamaki is horrified to hear this and snaps out of his depression. He tells Kasanoda that as Haruhi’s ‘father’ he opposes this.

A confused Kasanoda asks Tamaki if he’s really Haruhi’s father. Tamaki stammers and tells him that they are not related by blood but he’s like a father to Haruhi. Kasanoda tells Tamaki that this means he’s not Haruhi’s father, causing Tamaki to suffer from an identity crisis. He starts to wonder why he thinks Haruhi is cute and dear to him if it’s not a fatherly feeling. Why is he worried with the idea of Haruhi being with another man? If he’s not a father, then he has no right to interfere her relationship with another man. Kaoru, who has vested interest in the matter, asks Tamaki if he’s confused because he doesn’t want to destroy their connections as a ‘family’. Unfortunately for Kaoru, Tamaki has no idea what he’s talking about so Kaoru concludes that Tamaki is an idiot. Thankfully for Tamaki, Haruhi tells Kasanoda that Tamaki looks like her father. Tamaki immediately regains his spirit and tells everyone although he’s not Haruhi’s father, he’s similar to her father.

Meanwhile, Kasanoda decides to take the plunge, trying to tell Haruhi that when it comes to her, he…. unfortunately Haruhi dashed his hope by saying that having a friend is nice. Renge and the other fangirls are disappointed by this development and feel sorry for Kasanoda. Even the twins feel sorry for him. In the end, however, Kasanoda gets consolation prize when everyone wants to become his friends. Tamaki then tells Kyouya that when he thinks about Kasanoda’s feelings for Haruhi, his heart ache a little bit. Kyouya tells Tamaki that is strange since Tamaki is supposed to be her ‘father’. Later on, everyone protests when Tamaki wants to take Haruhi to play hide and seek together. On top of a tree, Hunny wonders if it’s okay for Tamaki to not realise his feelings for Haruhi and if any of them will make progress by the time they graduate. Unfortunately Mori has no answer for this. Down in the maze, Tamaki asks the twins not to touch *his* Haruhi. In retaliation, the twins tell Tamaki that Haruhi does not belong to him. Haruhi tells them that she belongs to no one.

Ouran High Schoo Host Club ep 22

Friday, May 16th, 2008

Inside a house called "Kasanoda-gumi", a young man prepares himself to go to Ouran High. As soon as the man opens the front door, a group of thugs give him a synchronised "Good morning" greeting. When one of them asks him to do his best in ‘Otsutome’ (a Yakuza slang which means term of imprisonment but can also mean work), however, the guy turns around and yells at them in anger. He tells them he’s always said that going to school is not ‘Otsutome’. The thugs immediately apologises to their young master, who turns out to be a student from class 1-D called Kasanoda Ritsu. As Ritsu walks out of the gate, a young man asks Ritsu if he’s taking a car. Ritsu, however, refuses and tells the guy that he’s going to take a walk today. After Ritsu left the house, one of the thugs tells the others that lately their master’s observation skill is better. Outside the house, Ritsu tells himself that today is the day as an image of Mori flashes in his mind.

Meanwhile, the Host Club members are in the middle of cosplaying as Samurai and Shinsengumi. A female client asks Tamaki if he’s cosplaying as Sakamoto Ryouma. Tamaki confirms her guess and tells the girl in Tosa-ben (Tosa dialect) that he’d surely get their hearts. The girls of course, squeeing as usual while Haruhi is not impressed. Moreover, she didn’t know that Bakumatsu (the end of Edo era) cosplay is popular with the girls. The twins disagree with Haruhi and tells her that girls who love Bakumatsu are more than she can imagine, especially when it comes to the Shinsengumi. Hunny chimes in by saying that generally, there are many who are enthusiastic about these kind of thing. Renge thinks that the reason for its popularity is because of the young nobles who lived for the country and fell for their belief. They had nothing but Bushido (samurai code of chivalry) to enforce their will and to stoically command themselves.

All of a sudden, Kaoru pretends as if he’s dying, so Hikaru pulls the his brother to his arm, causing the fangirls to scream in excitement. Renge then tells the girls that although the Ikedaya Incident is popular, just the idea of Fujikata-san going to the northern ground of Toba-Fushimi to protect the ideal of Shinsengumi all by himself makes her want to eat 3 bowl of rice. Upon hearing this, Kyouya thanks Renge for leaving the girls to their own wild imagination instead of unskillfully casting their roles. Renge agrees but thinks that Haruhi looks like Okita Souji. One of the girls immediately declares that Haruhi sure looks like a bishounen samurai while another cries and asks Haruhi not to die (rumour has it that Okita Souji died of tuberculosis). Unknown to both girls, Haruhi is not paying attention to what either of them said. Apparently there is a pork meat sale at her local supermarket today so she wonders if she’ll be able to make it in time.

Meanwhile, three girls are watching over Mori, arguing which character he should be. One of them thinks that he should be Shimada Kai while another believes that he should be Yamazaki Suzumu, the last girl thinks he should be Souma. All of a sudden, Mori stands up and swings his spear towards the door. He tells the rest of the Host Club members that they have an intruder. The intruder turns out to be Ritsu, who suddenly asks Mori to take him as an apprentice. Later on Kyouya tells the others that the guy is Kasanoda Ritsu, the son of 3rd generation successor to the Kasanoda group, a company that wields great power in Kantou region. He’s a new student at Ouran and his trademarks are his red hair and cruel face. He is typically silent and has no friend. It is rumoured that those who see his eyes will suffer from nightmare for 3 months. He’s also the kind who will ’send a person to the hospital’ if that person’s shoulder collide with his.

If a person argue with him, he’d surely send that person straight into the graveyard. As a result, his classmates are afraid of this human blizzard. Upon hearing this Tamaki wonders why a dangerous weapon of a person like Ritsu would want to be Mori’s apprentice. Ritsu tells Tamaki that he’s not a dangerous weapon type of a person. It’s just that his eyes look scary ever since his birth. The twins then start calling him Casanova so Kasanoda tries to correct the two but unfortunately, they think his name is Bosanova. Ritsu loses his patience and yells at them, scaring not only the twins but also Tamaki. He then explains how his father have been teaching him to act and talk tough ever since he was a kid. Because of this, however, everyone ends up being afraid of him. They distance themselves from Ritsu, leaving him in solitary. The truth is, Ritsu wants to play with everyone. Because of this, he wants Mori to tell him how he can be like Mori.

He thinks that Mori looks scary, expressionless, silent, and unsociable. Ritsu wonders how someone who looks like a Hell’s watchdog can be loved by those around him. Because of this, he wants Mori to tell his secret. The twins ask Tamaki if they are not going to deal with Ritsu but Tamaki tells them that the guy wants to become Mori’s apprentice so the decision falls onto Mori. However, after Mori gives Tamaki an eye signal asking for help, Tamaki decides to take matters into his own hand. He tells Ritsu that one thing that Mori have and he doesn’t is a ‘Lovely Item’. The item for Mori is, of course, Hunny. He points out that on a glance, Mori looks scary. However, once you attach Hunny on his shoulder, Mori’s status turn into a Mori (Forest) Bear who is liked by small animals. After this, people will freely give positive interpretation of his unsociability and make it into something positive like "a silent and good young man."

Tamaki thinks it’s not an overstatement to say that Mori’s charm was only established after he’s paired up with Hunny. Upon hearing this, Hunny starts crying, asking Mori if all of these times he’s just using Hunny. Meanwhile, Tamaki wonders what he can possibly change in Ritsu when he notices Ritsu’s ‘Yankee’s fashion’. Because of this, he orders the twins to give Ritsu an image change. That evening, Ritsu returns to his home and is greeted by the young man calls Tetsuya. Tetsuya, however, is shocked when he sees Ritsu with dreadlock hair, metrosexual scarf, and a teddy bear (his ‘Lovely Item’). Tetsuya can’t help himself from asking Ritsu what happened at school. Ritsu, on the other hand, is too embarassed to explain so he ends up scaring everyone around him. The next day, Tetsuya notices that the weather looks bad so he wonders if Ritsu carried an umbrella with him. Ritsu himself is in the school, offering to carry Mori’s bag to the class.

In the middle of their conversation, however, Mori notices that someone has pushed a potted plant so that it’ll fall on top of Ritsu’s head. Mori quickly pushes Ritsu away but another potted plant is dropped on Ritsu so Mori slices it with his bare hand. After seeing the incident, other students immediately surrounds Mori, concerned for his well-being. Ritsu admires Mori because despite his scary eyes, students swarm to be near him. Ritsu eventually arrives back at the Host Club, where Tamaki announces the beginning of the image improvement strategy. Ritsu immediately protests this, claiming that yesterday’s attempt simply makes others more afraid of him. Because of this, Tamaki approaches him and asks Ritsu not to misunderstand them. He assures Ritsu that they are serious in assisting him and blames yesterday’s incident on the twins. Ritsu becomes embarassed to hear this and apologises to Tamaki.

While the rest of the Host Club formulate their plan to transform Ritsu, Haruhi approaches the guy to tell him that he doesn’t have to believe the other guys’ words. Ritsu points out that these are the people that Mori recommends to him. He then remembers that he doesn’t know Haruhi so Haruhi introduces herself as a first year student as well. Since she’s also a new high school student, she feels that she and Ritsu are like friends already. Ritsu blushes upon hearing this and asks Haruhi if she likes playing Kankeri (Kick the Can) game. Haruhi admits that she’s not particularly interested in it but she thinks it is probably good to play occasionally. Ritsu blushes even more to hear this. He also starts to stutter and tells himself that Haruhi looks like a girl. His thought, however, is interrupted when Tamaki suddenly calls him to let him know that his ‘Lovely Image’ has been determined. It’s a cat, or rather, he gets to wear a Neko-mimi (cat ears) hairband.

Unfortunately no one seems to be convinced of his…transformation. He actually looks kind of scary to the point that Hunny calls him Bakeneko (Monstrous Cat). Tamaki finds it weird because Neko-mimi has been known to be a lovely item or at least that’s what Renge told him. Kyouya thinks there is a limit to what a Neko-mimi can do to someone’s expression. Hikaru thinks Tamaki is too optimistic so the twins suggest that they turn Ritsu into a Neko-mimi maid. It looks like Ritsu is going to refuse the idea flat out but when Tetsuya enters the room, he finds the twin in the middle of outfitting Ritsu into his Neko-mimi maid outfit. Tetsuya immediately apologises for interrupting Ritsu while he’s enjoying his hobby. Ritsu becomes angry to hear this and asks the guy who could possibly have a hobby like this. Ritsu then throws the Neko-mimi in frustration and runs out of the room in embarassment while Tetsuya tries to chase him.

After Ritsu left the room, Haruhi remembers what the guy said about wanting to play with everyone else. At the same time, Ritsu remembers how other students often talk about how scary he can be. He then opens a basket, revealing that he’s been taking care an injured Sparrow. He urges the bird to fly after giving it some food. He, however, is shocked when Haruhi suddenly appears. He wants to know what Haruhi is doing in this place but she does not answer and instead asks him what happened to the bird. Ritsu explains that he found the bird injured here. After taking it to the doctor, he was informed that it’s getting well. Haruhi then asks Ritsu if she can give the bird some food too. Ritsu blushes again and remembers how Haruhi introduced herself. He realises that this guy is not afraid of him. He notices that Haruhi has large iris which sparkles brightly, making ‘him’ look like a girl.

Ritsu suddenly remembers that Haruhi is a ‘guy’ so he wonders why he thinks of ‘him’ like this. All of a sudden, Hunny appears and blocks a can of paint with his kick. Although he managed to stop the can, the paint itself got splashed onto Haruhi’s uniform. Because the bird is shocked, it flies away, making Ritsu happy in the process. Tamaki is upset thinking Haruhi is bleeding but she tells him it’s just a paint. Besides, Mori manages to catch the two people who threw the can. One of them accuses Ritsu of threatening the son of their leader and demands Ritsu to return that son. Ritsu, however, doesn’t understand what the guy is talking about. Hunny tells Ritsu that the one who’s been targeted right from the beginning is actually him. Ritsu realises that Mori has been saving him and wonders why he did it. Mori pats Ritsu on the head and tells him it’s because he understands just by looking if a person is bad or not.

Haruhi tells the other that she’s going to change her clothes. The twins offer to help her but she refuses them right away. Tetsuya then appears and kicks the two thugs who tried to harm Ritsu. As it turns out, he’s the ’son’ that the thugs were talking about. After Tetsuya orders the thugs to go away, he apologises to Ritsu for being silent before. The truth is, he’s the son of Sendou-gumi’s Kantou branch leader. 1 year ago, on one rainy day, he had a big fight with his father and ran away from his home. Back then, Ritsu offered Tetsuya his umbrella and Tetsuya knew that Ritsu is a kind person. Because of this, he wants to sever ties with the Sendou-gumi and joins Kasanoda-gumi. Tetsuya then gives Ritsu an umbrella and Ritsu accepts the umbrella. Ritsu remembers that he hasn’t apologised to Haruhi so he goes on to check her at the music room. He, however, is shocked when he sees Haruhi taking off her clothes, revealing the bra underneath it.

Ouran High Schoo Host Club ep 21

Friday, May 16th, 2008

The episode begins with a carriage operating in the middle of the night while Kaoru claims that when it turns to midnight, the carriage will probably turn into pumpkin. The scene then changes into Kaoru in the middle of the class, daydreaming while saying that, he thinks that the person who will cast the magic will not be an old witch. In front of the class, 1-A class rep, Souga Kazukiyo, wants to talk about next week’s plan. Haruhi is confused about this so the twins tell her that it’s about Halloween. 1-A class vice rep, Kurakano Momoka, tells Haruhi that she probably doesn’t know it before since she’s a special admission student but while school test are graded, there are no classes so students are allowed to have class party. Souga then explains that they get a day to do class event. According to the twins, this could be tea party or movie watching. From inside a movie reel, however, Renge comes out saying that those ideas are not good enough.

Renge starts waxing poetry about Halloween, a day that connects the end of summer and the start of winter, a day where people assume the form of evil creatures, and a day where you get to dress up and play trick on others. Upon seeing Renge’s strange outfit, Haruhi can’t help herself asking what kind of uniform that is so Renge tells her that it’s the schoolgirl uniform from next year’s Doki Doki Memorial 2 game. Apparently Renge has it tailored based on her findings. She then points out that tea party and costume party are the kind of things that they always do at the Host Club so she suggests something more exciting for Halloween: Kimodameshi (a test of courage game/a dare). Upon hearing this, Souga’s body temperature suddenly goes down a bit. Renge, however, continues by saying that they will ask permission from school’s principal to open the school at night so they can dress up as ghost and scare each other off.

Unfortunately for Souga, Hikaru suggests to the class that the coward who runs away before the event ends will be featured on the school’s newspaper. Because of this, Souga asks the class if there is anyone who objects to the idea, hoping that Haruhi will be that person. Unfortunately for Souga, despite his stern look and slightly raised voice, Haruhi remains clueless about his signals. Eventually, Souga has no choice but to approve the game. Meanwhile, inside the Host Club, Tamaki is playing trick and treat on the girls while dressing up as vampire. Apparently he decides to hold a Halloween week which requires everyone to dress up as vampires. He’s not happy when he finds out that the twins and Haruhi want to be exempted from club’s activities because they have to plan their class event. Unfortunately for Tamaki, Kyouya approves the exemption. Tamaki starts to think that the twin will use the opportunity to scare Haruhi off so she’ll get close to them.

Upon seeing his overactive imagination, Tamaki uses his ‘daddy’ role to stop Haruhi from leaving, prompting Kaoru to reflect how even though they’re just club members, Tamaki sees them as families. Despite this, the twins can’t resist to teast Tamaki and disappear out of the door with Haruhi. Tamaki wants to come but he’s startled by the creepy laugh which comes from a coffin behind him. The source of the laugh turns out to be Nekozawa sempai, who invites Tamaki to give the first year a ‘Halloween Present’ they’ll never forget. While the rest of the class are having fun planning for the event, Souga uses the opportunity to talk to Haruhi outside the class. He admits of suffering from darkness/ghost stories phobia so he begs Haruhi to help him. He also tells her that he actually send some signals to her before but she wasn’t responding. Haruhi thinks Souga has zero telepathic ability. Either way, Souga wants Haruhi to be in his Kimodameshi team.

Unfortunately for Souga, the twins overhear this and decide to recruit him and Haruhi on their team. Because of this, the vice class rep decides to call them Team B. On Halloween night, Hikaru and Kaoru are having a blast scaring Souga with story about Clock Tower Witch. Apparently, there once was a student who dressed up as a witch and fell to her death from the clock tower. Ever since then, anyone who sees her will be cursed. Souga freaks out about this so Haruhi tells the twin to scaring their own team member. The twins argue that no one comes so they’re bored. At the same time, Souga’s spirit starts to run away from his body so Haruhi pulls it back and tells the guy to get a grip. Haruhi then tries to give Souga pointers on how to get rid of his fear such as pretending not seeing something even if he does. Unfortunately, hearing the suggestions simply scares Souga even more. He insists on going home and doesn’t care even if others call him a coward.

He, however, quickly changes his mind when the twin remind him that he’ll be the laughing stock of the girl that he likes, the vice-class rep, Kurakano. Upon seeing Souga blushing, Haruhi tells him that she didn’t know Souga likes Kurakano. Souga immediately denies this and tells Haruhi that they’re just childhood friends. The twin then accuse him of pretending not abusing his power as class rep when the truth is he just doesn’t want others to find out that he’s a coward. Souga, however, denies this and tells them that the real reason he agree to this plan is because Kurakano likes Kimodameshi. The twins are horrified upon hearing this because they realise that just like Tamaki, Souga is one of those ‘pure types’, which can make them feel guilty if they make fun of him. Because of this, the twins decide to help the guy instead. While talking about this, however, Haruhi sees something passes by and wonders if it’s just her who saw the figure.

All of a sudden, a skull falls from the stairwell, scaring the four students in the process. After a while, however, Kaoru thinks that this is the work of Team A. Hikaru is pissed off about this because it’s not their time to do it just yet so he kicks the skull back upstairs, hitting something in the process. That something turns out to be a figure with long hair and white kimono. Souga wonders if the figure is the ‘Clock Tower Witch’ that the twins were talking about. After the figure reveals its face and asks who threw the skull, the four students proceed to run for their life. In their attempt to escape, Souga and Kaoru are seperated from Haruhi and Hikaru. Haruhi ends up hitting a rope which is stretched across the hall. This in effect, triggers a trap which captures her and Hikaru inside a fishnet. On the other hand, Souga gets the terror of his life when he sees members of the Host Club dressing up as horror characters like Frankenstein (Mori).

Kaoru eventually manages to catch up with Souga but before he can calm the class rep, Nekozawa butler and maid jumps from the ceiling and kick the two boys into a storage room. They then use sandbag to ensure that the two boys can’t get out of the room. As it turns out, the whole thing was Nekozawa-sempai’s plan and he gets the rest of the Host Club to participate. The only exception to this is Kyouya, who prefers to read using a flashlight. Meanwhile, Hikaru panics when he realises that Kaoru is not around. Haruhi tries to calm him down because she wants to cut the net using the scissors that she owns. Hikaru is surprised to see the scissors coming from a sewing box because he didn’t think Haruhi is into that kind of ‘girly thing’. Haruhi is not happy about this and tells Hikaru that he’s rude. Hikaru tries to excuse himself by saying that Kaoru is similar. Haruhi disagrees and tells Hikaru that when Kaoru is on his own, he acts like normal person.

Inside the room, Kaoru laments the fact that their plan was ruined. Apparently the twin were planning to scare off Kurakano so that Souga can comfort her. Souga thanks Kaoru for the thought but he thinks Kurakano actually likes Haruhi. He thinks although Haruhi is not interested right now, maybe ‘he’ will in the future. Kaoru simply sweatdrops upon hearing this and assures Souga that Haruhi won’t ever be interested in Kurakano. Upon hearing this, Souga points out he already happy from being in the student committee with Kurakano so he doesn’t want to ruin that. Kaoru understands this and likens Souga/Kurakano’s friendship to a carriage. He also feels the same way about the Host Club and thinks that Tamaki doesn’t want their current relationship to fall apart. Despite this, he thinks one day the carriage will inevitably become a pumpkin. Their conversation, however, comes to a halt when Hikaru suddenly burst through the door.

The twins are eventually reunite with one another again. Souga, however, asks Hikaru where Haruhi could be. Hikaru is shocked to hear this because he actually left Haruhi behind. Thankfully Haruhi manages to find their whereabouts not long after this. Haruhi is not angry but thinks Hikaru is cruel for leaving her all alone after she cut the net open. Hikaru apologises profusely to Haruhi while Kaoru looks on at his brother in disbelief. The four then meet the rest of their classmates, who apparently have been looking all over for them. The twins are surprised to hear this and tell them that they think Team A was the one who scared them. Team A, however, denies of any wrongdoing. In the middle of the debate, however, Renge and Kurakanao scream in terror because they just saw something. That something is a large cat sillhoutte on the glass rooftop. Everyone from class 1-A immediately scream in terror and all of their spirits leave their body.

The next day, the school newspaper posts pictures of their scared faces, referring the entire 1-A class as a bunch of cowards. They also find out that Nekozawa-sempai was the one who pulled the trick on them and the large shadow was just his Bereznoff puppet. Kurakano then tells Kazukiyo that she knows Kazukiyo was acting brave for the class’ sake. Kazukiyo apologises but Kurakano thinks that he’s great and she actually regains respect for him. Kaoru points out how in the end the carriage between the two can’t go on. Hikaru doesn’t understand what Kaoru is talking about, causing Kaoru to remember how Hikaru left Haruhi to look for him. He thinks it’ll be nice if Hikaru comes to him first in that kind of situation. However, the then leads Haruhi and Hikaru to walk side by side before letting them go. Kaoru can’t help but wonder what will he do if Hikaru once to progress further. The episode then ends by showing a shot of a pumpkin.

Ouran High Schoo Host Club ep 20

Friday, May 16th, 2008

The twins remember the first time they asked a girl if she knows which one of them is Hikaru and which one is Kaoru. Back then, the girl mistook Kaoru as Hikaru, much to the dismay of the twins. Kaoru explains that the two of them have always been of one existence. This is something that the two of them treasure. Having said that they are also two seperate individuals. What isn’t Kaoru is Hikaru and what isn’t Hikaru is Kaoru. When the two were 2nd grader middle high students, a girl gave a love letter to Hikaru but Hikaru pretended that he’s actually Kaoru and the girl put her letter on the wrong desk. ‘Kaoru’ (Hikaru) then decided to play with the girl’s heart a bit more by asking her if he’s not good for her since he always thought that she’s cute. Moreover, Hikaru has other girls that he likes. When the girl tells ‘Kaoru’ that she also likes Kaoru, ‘Kaoru’ yelled at the real Kaoru who’s hiding behind the bush that this girl is fine with him too.

The girl told them that it was cruel of them to make fun of her but they blamed her for thinking that either one of them will be okay. After making fun of the girl’s hairstyle, the twins ripped out her letter and told her to come up with a more interesting confession next time. After the twins left, Tamaki came over and tried to cheer up the devastated girl. In the class, Hikaru asked Kaoru to check an interesting site he just found. Kaoru told Hikaru that he’s in the middle of playing net game but Hikaru convinced Kaoru to give up on the game, claiming that it is boring because their opponents are weak and dumb. Kaoru then narrates by saying that their motto is to eliminate boring things. At the same time, their classmates whispered to each other, saying that the twins are dreadful because those two always look down on others. Unfortunately, their father want them to get along with the twins even though they think the twins don’t like anyone apart from each other.

The twins denied this and claimed that there is one person that they like. A flashback to the time when the two were still kids show the twins having long hair and wearing girl’s dress. A female guest tried to distinguish the two and guessed that the one in blue outfit and hair is Hikaru while the one with pink outfit and hair is Kaoru. The two told the guest that she’s wrong. The one with pink hair is Hikaru and blue hair is Kaoru. They complained how she always got it wrong and looking dumb as a result. The woman apologised and told the two that they both look like a spitting image of the other. In reply, the twins told the woman that she looks like the spitting image of a frog. They then set a frog on the poor woman’s face. As the woman struggled to get the frog away from her face, a maid appeared and apologised to the woman. Kaoru claims that they both like the maid. However, the maid is actually a thief looking to open the Hitachiin family’s safety deposit box.

However, when the maid was busy figuring out the deposit box’s number, the twins suddenly appeared behind her. The maid got startled a little bit but she quickly regained her composure and asked the two what they are doing in the middle of the night. The twins casually told her that they are doing night time exploration. The maid realised that the twins had seen her trying to open the safe so she decided to whip out a knife and order the two to be quiet. In retaliation, the twins pulled out a switch and pointed out to the maid that if they push it, guards will arrive all at once. The maid panicked and asked the two to stop. The twin then produced a piece of paper, claiming that the number of the safe is written on it. They promised the maid that if she plays with them, they will give the paper to her. Because of this, the maid asked the twins about the kind of game that they want to play. Not suprisingly, they want to play the Guess which one of us is Hikaru-kun.

One night before the two went to bed, Kaoru asked Hikaru if he has the paper containing the safety deposit number. Hikaru assured Kaoru that it should be okay since he put it inside a saving box. Kaoru narrates how they wanted the maid to distinguish them because they like her. That same night, they heard the alarm went off inside the house and when they get into the safety deposit box, it’s already empty. The two found the maid about to climb her way down using rope ladder. When they asked the maid if she’s going to break her promise, she smiled and told them that she had no choice. She could not possibly distinguished them. She also claimed that there may not be anyone who could distinguish the two of them. With that as her last word, the maid disappeared into the night. In the table, their saving box has been smashed into pieces. The twins then continued to place barrier between themselves and others. However, Kaoru believes that the barrier wasn’t visible to someone as slow as Tamaki, who approached the two to form the Host Club club.

Hikaru didn’t know who Tamaki was so Kaoru told his twin that this is the guy that the girls in the class often talked about. The guy who joined the school in spring last year. Tamaki became excited to hear this and asked the twins if he’s that famous and oozes brightness that stops everyone’s eyes. Hikaru told Tamaki that they did not say such things but Tamaki had gone on to tell them that the formation of club usually starts in two months (April). Although Tamaki will be a high school student soon and the twins still have one more year before they pass middle high, he’s willing to overlook that part. He then went on to mention that other would-be members are his classmate, Kyouya, and then first year high school students Hunny and Mori. The twins, however, told Tamaki that he’s noisy and asked him to go away since they have no interest in him. However, if he wants to make them his ‘acquintance’, he must take a challange: Which one of us is Hikaru-kun?.

The twins gave Tamaki a one month time to figure it out. In between the deadline, he can try as many as he wants but unless he gave them a reason for the answer, he won’t be successful. The twins then informed Tamaki that so far no one has been able to give them the right answer. They then walked away from the guy, thinking that their game has deterred the guy. However, much to their surprise Tamaki accepted the challange. In exchange, if he wins, the twins have to join his club. He even predicted that in April, the twins will open the door of the high school’s third music room. With that in mind, the game began. When the twins were about to finish their second year in middle high, a girl told them that there’ll be a class event after the closing ceremony. However, the twins rebuffed her even after she reminded them that this will be the last 2nd year class event. They think that there’s nothing particularly memorable about their 2nd year.

All of a sudden, Tamaki appeared and yelled out that the guy who’s reading a book (Kaoru) is Hikaru. He then asked the twins if he’s getting ‘warmer’ with his guess and the reply is obviously ‘no’. Tamaki continued by pointing out that Hikaru is right-handed but Hikaru told him that both of them are right-handed. Tamaki refused to give up and claimed that Kaoru has his hair parted to the right hand side. In reply, Kaoru told Tamaki that they always changed their hairstyle. Tamaki also noticed that when the twins talked at the same time, their voice are on the lower end of the spectrum. The twins immediately changed their voice so they sound like a chorus. The twins’ classmates then called out after Tamaki so he asked them if there is something that they want from the twins. When the girls told him that they want to know about the twin’s participation in the class event, which was a movie appreciation meeting, he signed them up for it.

The twins were unhappy about this and asked Tamaki not to decide on his own. They then exit the class, leaving Tamaki behind. Because of this Tamaki had no choice but to return to his class looking worn-out. Kyouya is surprised to see Tamaki since he thought that Tamaki was going to meet the twin. Tamaki told Kyouya that the two ran away and urged Kyouya to help him, claiming that it’s for the club’s sake. However, Kyouya refused because they can form the club even without the twins. Despite this, Tamaki thought it’s not good enough since he has interest in the twins. Tamaki wanted to know what the twins were thinking since he believed that if they want to be recognised easily, they could have just changed their hairstyle. Kyouya pointed out that maybe they don’t want to be recognised. Tamaki, however, argued that the point of the game is to be recognised. Upon hearing this, Kyouya told Tamaki that maybe the twins want to be recognised.

Tamaki was annoyed to hear this and wondered if Kyouya was listening to him. In reply, Kyouya told Tamaki that he heard about half of it. On another morning, Tamaki was seen arriving in front of the twins’ house and asked them if this morning the one with right-parted hair is Kaoru and left-parted hair is Hikaru. The twins denied that he’s getting ‘warmer’ and were annoyed that Tamaki came all the way to their house. Tamaki, however, ignored them and instead pointed out that Kaoru walks with his legs turned inwards a little bit. He suggested that Kaoru treats his legs, offending the twins in the process. Tamaki then told them that he had an idea to sell their appeal as ‘brotherly love’, or rather, ’slightly dangerous, symmetrical brotherly love’. The twins had no idea what Tamaki means by this and decided to go to school. Inside the car, the twins laughed at Tamaki, whose tone reminded them of a Kabuki show called 「殿様しゃっべり」 - Tono-sama shabberi.

After the twins got a good laugh out of it, however, the two agreed that the game is getting boring. Because of this, they informed Tamaki that the game is over. Tamaki protested their decision and called them selfish but the twins admit that they are indeed selfish. The twins then decided to offend Tamaki by asking him if it’s true that he’s not the son of the board chairman’s legal wife. The two claimed that they feel sorry for Tamaki and told him that he probably doesn’t want this knowledge to spread as a rumour amongst the students. Moreover, it appears that the whereabouts of Tamaki’s mother is unknown. The twins also accused Tamaki of simply being lonely so they asked him not to selfishly tried to make them his acquintance. They pointed out that in comparison to Tamaki, who’s alone, being with each other is better. The twins admitted that they were always contradictory. They want people to recognise them but then they don’t want it.

They constantly seek people who can accept them but there was no one who’d accept them. They eventually believed that they won’t get hurt if they stay in their own world, one which was heavily locked. One day the twins did their usual trick, telling a girl that one of them is the other and then revealing that the real person is hiding behind the bush. The girl cried and ran away from the two but before Hikaru can rip out the girl’s letter, Tamaki yelled from a far, saying that the one who’s about to rip the letter is Hikaru. Hikaru was shocked to hear this but quickly asked Tamaki what is his reason for saying this. Tamaki simply told Hikaru that it’s his intuition. The twins were not impressed by this so Tamaki apologised and told them that it was kind of impossible because they look alike. Because of this, he thinks the two of them should be known as "The Hitachiin Brothers". Having said that, he hadn’t forgotten that the two are also two seperate individuals.

The twins claimed that the whole thing sounds contradictory. Tamaki does not see anything wrong with it because after all being contradictory is a part of their personality. It’s what people call "individuality". The twins became angry to hear this and told Tamaki that if they’re known as "The Hitachiin Brothers" then they’ll forever be remembered as a set. Kaoru also believed that no matter how much Tamaki tried, he could not possibly recognised them. He knew right from the start that there’s no one who could do the "Which one of us is Hikaru-kun game". The two then remembered of being surprised when the little girl from the flashback mistook Kaoru as Hikaru. Kaoru reflected how back then they probably wanted to cry. Tamaki told the twins that even if he couldn’t differentiate them, he believes that one day there’ll be someone who can. However, if they always stay in their own world, then they’ll never meet that person who can distinguish the two of them.

Because of this, he asked the twin if they’ll open the door of the Host Club together with him. He then told the two that the first meeting will be after the school’s opening ceremony in high school’s 3rd music room. A few days/months later, middle high school Haruhi came to see Ouran High, wondering if she can pass the examination. Behind Haruhi, Kyouya has also arrived at the school. Inside the school, Hunny found out that Mori has been invited by Tamaki to join the club. He also wondered if it’s okay for him to like cute things and cakes. In reply, Mori told Hunny that he should do what he feels. 1 month later, the twins were seen hesitating in front of the music room, telling each other that this is just to waste their time. Kaoru, however, remembered what the maid told them and realised that a person who could distinguish them is not in their world. Seeing Kaoru’s hesitation, Hikaru offered to open the door together. Kaoru narrates how the two then opened that door.

Ouran High Schoo Host Club ep 19

Friday, May 16th, 2008

The episode begins with the Host Club visiting Haruhi house but is surprised when they see a man opening the door. They immediately assume that they’ve got the wrong house. The man, however, stops then and reveals that he’s actually Ranka, Haruhi’s father, but his face is unshaven and he is not in drag. Tamaki immediately presents the guy with a box of cake but Ranka ends up punching him and greets the other members instead. He then informs them that Haruhi has left earlier in the morning with a few female friends. The guys immediately assume that the girls are Haruhi’s middle school friends and set to leave in disappointment. They, however, stop right away when Ranka mentions that the girls are actually from Lobelia Girl’s Academy. Meanwhile at Lobelia High, the Zuka Club girls lead by Benio are walking through a set of admirers. A girl comes out of the crowd to present Benio with a Bento containing Benio’s favourite: Octopus-shaped sausages.

In return Benio tells the girl that she is similar to the dishes she had prepared and wonders if she wants to be eaten too. This immediately drives all the girls wild, wanting to give their sausages to Benio as well. The girls eventually manage to wade through their fangirls and arrive at a room. They immediately check on Haruhi, who is now wearing Lobelia school uniform. At the same time, Ranka is in panic because she’s afraid Haruhi will get her first kiss from the Zuka Club. The twins remember that Haruhi had experienced her first kiss but Tamaki silence them up using bandages before they can tell Ranka about this. Back at Lobelia, Haruhi is not happy that the Zuka Club has abducted her while she was on her way to go shopping. She likens their attempt to that of the Host Club, a comparison which Benio hates. Benio, however, calms down and explains that they simply want Haruhi to perform in a play to commemorate the birthday of Zukabu founder.

Apparently the girl who’s supposed to play the heroine got hit by a motorbike and is now hospitalised so they’ve decided to assign Haruhi the role of the heroine. Haruhi doesn’t want to play the role and refuses them flat out. The girls are shocked to hear the refusal so Benio tries to persuade Haruhi by saying that the role only requires her to stand around symbolically. In addition to this, they think Haruhi would have been easiliy memorise her lines. Haruhi, however, still doesn’t care until Benio kneels on her legs asking for forgiveness from her mother because she can’t be like her. Chizuru and Hinako informs Haruhi that Benio’s mother is a graduate of Lobelia’s White Lily Society and Benio aspires to become just like her mother. That means if they can’t get today’s performance on the go, that means Benio won’t be able to realise her dream. Haruhi, who’s weak when it comes to hearing the word ‘Mother’ eventually agrees to help the Club in the play.

Meanwhile outside the school, Ranka is worried about his daughter because he thinks once a girl is corrupted by them, you can’t escape anymore. Kyoya, however, assures him that Haruhi won’t be easily deceived. In retaliation, Ranka points out that when he was cleaning up his house one day, he found out that his normally calm wife, Kotoko, possesses a large amount of Zuka Club photo collection. The Host Club panic upon hearing this because they are afraid that Haruhi will follow her mother’s footstep. In his panic, Tamaki asks Kyouya to obtain Lobelia uniforms so they can dress up as the students. Before he can proceeds further with the plan, however, Ranka kicks him on the back, wondering if Tamaki is trying to make fun of a professional cross-dresser like him by doing this. Besides, Ranka has his own plan. Meanwhile, Haruhi is now seen rehearsing a play called The Memoirs of Senorita. Although the only line she gets to say is “Frederique-sama”.

Upon seeing Benio (who plays a dying man) delivering her lines with enthusiasm, Haruhi tells herself that for a dying man, Benio’s character sure talks a lot to the point of looking healthy. At the same time, the Host Club members have now managed to penetrate the school and are now looking into practice room. They are horrified with Haruhi’s flat, monotonous delivery though and Tamaki even calls Haruhi “Daikon” (not the vegetable, but a short way of saying Daikon Yakusha, a Kabuki term used to decribe a bad actor). Ranka is especially worried when Haruhi is about to sing because he knows that Haruhi is a bad singer. Everyone, however, is surprised when they hear a beautiful song coming from Haruhi. Not long after this, however, the sound disappears although Haruhi’s mouth is still moving. It appears that Haruhi has been lip-synching to a song and Hinako just tripped over the cable of the tape recorder that plays the song.

Outside, the Host Club, who are now wearing Benibara shirts, are caught by a bunch of Benibara fangirls. They end up being forced to practice giving proper greeting to Benio with the rest of the fanclub. Tamaki wonders if this is a part of Ranka’s plan so Ranka tells him that it’s necessary to get the fans’ opinion if they want to get closer to the Zuka Club. During break, two Benibara fans start to question the guys about what part of Benio they like. Thankfully for the Host Club, Ranka knows well how to answer like a gushing fangirl. Through this conversation, however, they find out that the girls has assigned some Yankee girls to ensure that no one ruins Benio’s performance. The Host Club are disturbed about this because they’re afraid that Haruhi’s bad acting will ruin the entire performance. Because of this, the guys decide to sneak into the auditorium. Unfortunately for the group, their sneaky attempt is spotted by Benio.

At the same time, the Host Club realises that Kyouya is not with them anymore. As it turns out, Kyouya has been using his Ootori’s family name to get a tour into the the control room. A woman shows him a device which will be used to project various pictures onto the stage’s large digital screen. The performance then begins with Haruhi lip-synching to the song. Everyone, however, is shocked when they see her wearing too much make up. Tamaki wants to save Haruhi right away but Ranka stops him because Haruhi seems to be doing her best on stage. In the end, everyone agrees that they should not interfere. However, the time then arrives for a kissing scene. Tamaki remembers that Benibara fangirls once told them that the play is about Frederique exacting revenge. At the same time, Frederique (Benio) tells Marianne (Haruhi) that he can’t forget his desire for revenge towards that man. All of a sudden, three spotlights highlight the Host Club members.

Benio tells Haruhi that she’ll steal Haruhi’s first kiss in front of Tamaki as a revenge on the guy. Tamaki tries to stop the two but a monkey throws a banana skin, causing him to trip over. Benio uses the opportunity to take Haruhi to an elevated stage, making it impossible for Tamaki to reach them. However, before Benio can kiss Haruhi, Kyouya manages to project a picture of Haruhi’s first kiss with Kanako onto the stage. Everyone is shocked to see this and Tamaki uses the opportunity to ask Haruhi to jump into his arms. Haruhi lands on Tamaki’s body, flattening the poor guy in the process. Haruhi, however, has her own horror next because her father is not happy that she has already had her first kiss. Poor Haruhi ends up running around trying to avoid her father and everyone else who wants to get her. She now wish she’s at home studying. The episode then ends with a monkey eating Takoyaki and throwing one onto a stage to trip everyone off.
